Car paperwork accumulates in the worst possible way: a registration in the glovebox, an insurance PDF in email, workshop invoices in a kitchen drawer, tire receipts photographed and forgotten in the camera roll. None of it is anywhere when you need it — at a roadside check, at a claim, or when a buyer asks what has been done to the car.

How filing actually works
The point is not storage — a cloud drive does storage. The point is that you should not have to name, sort and file anything.
1. Capture
Photograph a document with the camera, import a PDF from Files, pick an image from Photos, or share it into MyGarage from another app. Multi-page documents stay as one document.
2. Read
Text recognition extracts the content, including from photographs taken at an angle in bad light. That text is what makes documents searchable later.
3. Classify
A classifier decides what the document actually is — an insurance policy, a service invoice, a warranty, a maintenance schedule, a vehicle history report — and hands it to the handler for that type. An insurance policy becomes a policy record with an expiry date and a renewal reminder. A service invoice becomes a timeline entry with mileage, cost and the components that were worked on. A maintenance schedule becomes a set of due-next intervals measured against the car's real mileage.
This is the part that distinguishes filing from organizing: the document is not just put in a folder, it is understood, and the rest of the app updates because of it.
4. Tag and file
Documents get tags from a fixed set of 40 across 7 categories, plus any free-form tags you add yourself. With auto-filing on, folders are created and assigned automatically. With it off, you get a suggestion you can accept or ignore.
5. Find
Search covers document titles, tags, extracted text and the records built from them. Because the text was recognized at import, searching for a policy number, a garage name or a part finds the document containing it, not just documents you happened to name well.
Documents belong to a car
Every document is attached to a specific vehicle. If you keep two cars — or a car and a motorbike, or the family's three — each has its own documents, timeline, expenses, insurance and reminders, and switching between them switches the whole context. Search works across all of them and groups results by car.
Where the documents live
On your device. There is no account, and no MyGarage server holding your registration document. You can back up to your own iCloud Drive, and you can export everything — data, documents and photos — into a single file you keep yourself.
That also means losing the phone without a backup means losing the documents, which is the honest trade-off of local-first storage. Set up a backup early.
